Reflection
The most valuable skill I learned from developing this capstone project was the importance of understanding my learners in order to create meaningful learning experiences for them. Prior to enrolling into the Learning Design and Technology program, I was not aware of the impact learner's background had on instruction. This program taught me the importance of embracing learning in the 21st Century and gave me a better understanding of the instructional design process. With this new knowledge, I was able to effectively design a corporate training project using the ADDIE instructional design framework.
While all five phases of the ADDIE model are important, in my perspective, the most critical step to create effective design is the analysis phase. Without obtaining pertinent background information on the learners, environment, and organization, one would be unable to design and develop valuable learning experiences. Although the analysis phase takes the most time to complete, the most difficult aspect of the capstone for me was the design phase. This phase challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and critically think about the selections I was making for the overall training and individual learning activities. For example, having to select the appropriate assessment items, learning activities, and media that would compliment the learning environment, instructional approach, and typologies was difficult because I would second guess my choices. Although this phase was challenging, it allowed me to develop my skills in designing and learning about new concepts such as effective test items and different media formats.
This capstone project not only provided me a valuable learning experience, it also made me aware of my potential as an instructional designer. I was able to reflect on the knowledge I gained throughout the program and find my own style as an instructional designer. I hope to continue mastering the skills and knowledge I learned in the program and use it to help my organization develop effective trainings for our employees.
